In 1989, IPST sent the first group of Thai students to compete in the international event as a way to boost Thai students’ interest in mathematics and science as well as to develop their potential for mathematics and science. Within two years, Thailand’s participation quickly extended to cover the International Olympiads in Chemistry, Physics, Computer, and Biology. Thailand has been actively involved in the Olympiads, both as participant and as an organizer. Recognizing the importance of science and mathematics as foundation of learning, the late HRH Princess Galyani graciously donated her personal fund to the project and invited her friends to do the same. Subsequently, she kindly encouraged the establishment of a foundation for supporting Thailand’s participation in the International Olympiads and developing science education standards. Moreover, she accepted the foundation under her patronage. The project has also received full support from the Science Society of Thailand, the private sector, the government, and the academics.
Support and training
IPST is responsible for preparing prospective students to participate in the International Olympiads. Using a three-step approach, IPST has had very satisfactory experiences with the International Olympiads. The procedure involves selecting 20-25 students competent in each field of the Olympiads by means of two national testing. Students who pass the second rounds are then intensively trained to become the representatives. The final stage is their participation in the International Olympiads in the discipline in which they excel.
